Windows Vista Tips and Tricks

Where is the Start Menu Folder?

Attach:vista_start.png Δ There are two folders comprising your Start Menu in Vista. The "global" one (for all users) is at

   C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It is merged with the user-specific start menu at

   C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

to produce the start menu you see when you click on the round logo button (shown right) and then expand All Programs.

You, of course, need Admin privileges to edit the global start menu --- i.e. Vista will annoy you with two popups every time you try to do anything in that folder, unless you disable the User Access Control.

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.

speech in the 1788 Virginia Convention
