Windows Vista Tips and Tricks

Where is the Start Menu Folder?

Attach:vista_start.png Δ There are two folders comprising your Start Menu in Vista. The "global" one (for all users) is at

   C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It is merged with the user-specific start menu at

   C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

to produce the start menu you see when you click on the round logo button (shown right) and then expand All Programs.

You, of course, need Admin privileges to edit the global start menu --- i.e. Vista will annoy you with two popups every time you try to do anything in that folder, unless you disable the User Access Control.

I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe — “That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.

Henry David Thoreau
Resistance to Civil Government, 1849
