Windows Vista Tips and Tricks

Where is the Start Menu Folder?

Attach:vista_start.png Δ There are two folders comprising your Start Menu in Vista. The "global" one (for all users) is at

   C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It is merged with the user-specific start menu at

   C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

to produce the start menu you see when you click on the round logo button (shown right) and then expand All Programs.

You, of course, need Admin privileges to edit the global start menu --- i.e. Vista will annoy you with two popups every time you try to do anything in that folder, unless you disable the User Access Control.

If, in the opinion of the People, the distribution or modification of the Constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates.óBut let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.

George Washington
Farewell Address (¶26), September 17, 1796
